A 40th Anniversary Exhibition

Celebrate an incredible 40 years of artistic exploration and experimentation with 17 artists & collectives and 4 executive directors who represent the wide range of cultural production that has taken place through SPACES.

20/20 Hindsight = 40 Years is curated by SPACES Executive Director Christina Vassallo, and former Executive Directors: founder James Rosenberger, Susan Channing, and Christopher Lynn. Each curator selected a group of artists who have defined their time at the helm of SPACES and whose work with SPACES propelled the artists’ careers.

Participating artists: Margaret Cogswell (New York, NY); Christa Donner (Chicago, IL); James Duesing (Pittsburgh, PA); Kevin Jerome Everson (Charlottesville, VA); Anna Viola Hallberg (Stockholm, Sweden); Kevin Hogan (Ashville, NC); Steffani Jemison (Brooklyn, NY); Ben Kinsley & Jessica Langley (Colorado Springs, CO); Steve Lambert (Purchase, NY); Pipo Nguyen-duy (Oberlin, OH); Sarah Paul (Cleveland, OH); Dan Rothenfeld (Cleveland, OH); Roopa Vasudevan (Shanghai, China); returning SWAP Artist-in-Residence Ward Shelley (Easton, CT); Corrie Slawson (Cleveland, OH), Amber J. Anderson (Cleveland, OH) & Elena Harvey Collins (Santa Cruz, CA); and Jud Yalkut (d. Cincinnati, OH). Dustin Grella (Bronx, NY) will collect visitors’ favorite SPACES stories through his Animation Hotline phone booth, in order to turn the voice mails into stop motion animations that be shown at SPACES in November 2018.

Jessica Langley (b. 1981, USA) is a multimedia artist. She has exhibited her work internationally, and has been an artist-in-residence in numerous programs including Skaftfell Center of Visual Art in Iceland, Askeaton Contemporary Art in Ireland, the SPACES World Artist Program in Cleveland, and the Digital Painting Atelier at OCAD-U in Toronto. She was a recipient of the J. William Fulbright Scholarship for research in Iceland, and earned her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2008. She is an amateur mycologist, and her artwork and writing have been published in the New York Mycological Society Newsletter, New American Paintings, NPR, Hyperallergic, and Temporary Art Review.
